Laurel View Village Resident Presented with Iwo Jima Remembrance

(Last Updated On: May 2, 2019)

The raising of the flag on Iwo Jima has become one of the most recognized military photos.

The Marine Corps League presented Mary Pero with a “Gold Star Lapel Button.” This pin is given to widows, widowers, children, parents, and siblings of members of the Armed Forces of the United States who lost their lives in the defense of democracy and freedom during World Wars I and II.
Michael Strank, Mary Pero’s brother, died in combat one week after raising the flag on Iwo Jima. Mary was presented with this pin, as well as the documentation of what it stands for and the meaning behind it. This February will be the 75th anniversary of the flag raising and there will be a special presentation held at the Johnstown War Memorial on or around Flag Day. More details will be posted at a later time.
