The Marine Corps League presented Mary Pero with a “Gold Star Lapel Button.” This pin is given to widows, widowers, children, parents, and siblings of members of the Armed Forces of the United States who lost their lives in the defense of democracy and freedom during World Wars I and II. Michael Strank, Mary Pero’s brother, died in combat one week after raising the flag on Iwo Jima.
