New Generation of Retirees Opts to Enjoy Active Lifestyle
When Jeff and Rosanne Croyle decided to sell their house and move
into the Townhomes at Laurel View Village, many friends and family
questioned the couple's decision. Semi-retired, Jeff is 62 and
Rosanne, 63. They moved to Laurel View Village in October of 2006.
"At first, they couldn't understand why we wanted to do this so
early in life," Rosanne explained. "But once we moved here and
invited our friends and family over, they saw how wonderful it is,
and so many of them are now saying, ‘You've got the right idea. This
is the way to go.'"
Rosanne's first exposure to Laurel View Village was as a visiting
nurse. Impressed by the quality of care and homelike setting, she
later moved both her mother and former mother-in-law into Laurel
View Village. After careful thought and prayer, the Croyles decided
the full-service retirement community is where they wanted to live
out their lives as well.
The Croyles represent a new generation of retirees that, by planning
ahead, have positioned themselves to embrace retirement living while
still young and healthy enough to enjoy it.
"We can do so many more things now than we could do before because
all we did was — go to work, come home and take care of the house.
And now, we go to work, and we come home and do whatever we want to
do," said Rosanne.
"The house doesn't own us anymore," Jeff added.
At first glance, the Croyles' former home was a dream. Nestled in a
quiet, wooded setting, the two-story stone construction was
extraordinary. A sprawling lawn, winding 400-foot driveway and
beautifully landscaped gardens completed the picture. But
maintaining the home and grounds had become burdensome and
all-consuming.
"Last February was the first time we ever went away in the winter
and never worried about a thing," said Jeff. At Laurel View Village,
residents are not responsible for snow removal or raking leaves. If
a furnace or other household appliance breaks, it's repaired or
replaced. Since moving here, the Croyles walk the trail and ride
their bikes. Both took advantage of the fitness equipment and pool
in the former Vista Apartments and are eager to do so again once the
new complex is completed.
"There are some friends of ours who moved in recently. They're 79,
and they said, ‘we should have done this at least five years ago,'"
said Rosanne.
The biggest mistake Jeff sees others his age and younger make is
underestimating what it costs to manage a home and failing to plan
for the future. Both townhome and apartment residents at Laurel View
Village are guaranteed priority access to the facility's personal
care and health care centers. To Jeff, that security is worth its
weight in gold.
"I joke and say we bought long term health care and got the townhome
for free," he laughed.
"And we wanted to have the option of choosing our nursing home way
ahead of time, instead of going where someone else would send us,"
Rosanne added.
Admittedly, retirement living isn't for everyone. But for the people
who take advantage of the amenities at Laurel View Village, it's
wonderful, Rosanne said. "We're trying to encourage friends who are
our age not to look at this as a place to go when you're old, but as
a community to join when you're younger and can enjoy it longer."
